PERREO 101 LAUNCHES UNIVERSITY LECTURE TOUR, BRINGING REGGAETON SCHOLARSHIP TO CAMPUSES ACROSS NORTH AMERICA

New York, NY — Perreo 101 announces its 2021 Lecture Tour, a multi-campus initiative transforming reggaeton from a global soundtrack into an academic conversation. Designed as a live extension of the Perreo 101 Podcast, the tour connects students, scholars, and music enthusiasts eager to deepen their understanding of reggaeton’s cultural, political, and commercial impact.

Led by cultural strategist and reggaeton historian Katelina “La Gata” Eccleston, the Perreo 101 Lecture Tour creates space for critical dialogue around the genre’s evolution, from its underground roots to its position as a dominant force in global music. Each stop combines lecture, open discussion, and podcast-style conversation, inviting students to actively engage with the music and its broader implications.

“Students are already listening to reggaeton,” says Eccleston. “This tour meets them where they are and expands the conversation—giving them the tools to understand the culture, the business, and the history behind what they’re hearing every day.”

The 2021 tour includes the following university stops:

  • McMaster University

  • Fordham University

  • Smith College

  • Harvard University

At each campus, students participated in dynamic sessions inspired by the Perreo 101 Podcast, engaging in conversations around identity, gender, globalization, and the commercialization of Latin urban music. The tour also provided a rare opportunity for students to critically examine reggaeton within an academic framework, bridging the gap between lived culture and institutional learning.

As reggaeton continues its global expansion, Perreo 101 stands at the forefront of documenting and educating its next generation of thinkers, creators, and industry leaders. The Lecture Tour signals a growing demand for culturally relevant education that reflects the realities and interests of today’s students.
